Several of our highly-skilled, experienced interventional radiologists specialize in image-guided, minimally invasive cancer therapy. We offer several of these treatments, including Chemoembolization and Radiofrequency Ablation.
Chemoembolization targets primary or metastatic cancer to the liver. Our interventional radiologist uses a catheter inserted in the femoral artery in the groin to gain access to the arteries that feed into the tumor. Under x-ray guidance, the catheter delivers a dose of drug-eluting beads that deliver chemotherapy directly to the tumor and block the blood supply the tumor. This procedure can be repeated over time. This treatment may be appropriate for patients who are not candidates for surgery, but who wish to slow down the progression of the cancer and improve their quality of life. Other possible candidates for chemoembolization are patients who cannot tolerate the side effects of chemotherapy.
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive, image-guided therapy used to treat primary or metastatic cancer in a variety of organs including the liver, kidney, lung, adrenal gland and bone. Our interventional radiologist uses CT imagery to place a probe directly into the tumor. Electrodes in the probe ablate, or burn, the tumor cells but spare the surrounding normal cells. This therapy is designed for patients who are not surgical candidates. In the bone, RFA can provide significant pain relief for those patients with painful bone metastases.
