Hospitalists

Hospitalists are specially trained internal medicine physicians who work exclusively in the hospital. They do not maintain private practices, but are responsible for admitting and managing inpatient care. Doylestown Health's Hospitalists care for nearly two-thirds of all medical and surgical admissions.

Hospitalists are among the Medical Staff leaders in the adoption of evidence-based protocols, technology improvement and, most importantly, patient safety and outcomes. They are experts in caring for patients with complex needs and are available 24/7. The same Hospitalist typically cares for an individual patient throughout their stay.

Hospitalists work with specially-trained nurse practitioners (NPs) and physician assistants (PAs) to deliver comprehensive patient care. Physician assistants and nurse practitioners are medical professionals who work as part of a team with the hospitalists. All practice with a similar philosophy and share common goals:

• Continuity of care for every patient throughout their hospitalization.
• The average length of stay for a patient is less than 4 days.
• Maintain close relationships with the patient's primary care doctor and other specialists like surgeons, cardiologists, radiologists, and gastroenterologists.

Connected to the Community

Hospitalists connect with primary care and specialist physicians in the community through an electronic medical record system that shares lab results, treatment plan and more between the hospital and community healthcare settings.

For community physicians who are not using the an electronic medical record system, Hospitalists provide a summary of a patient's hospital stay electronically or by fax within 24 hours of discharge.
