Health Information

Benefits of Cardiac Rehabilitation

Patients who participate in cardiac rehab learn how to manage their heart health and lower the risk of having a repeat cardiac event.

  • Cardiac rehab is as beneficial as taking cholesterol and heart medications.
  • Patients who complete 36 sessions of cardiac rehab, lower their chance of another cardiac event and mortality by 30 to 50 percent.

Personalized care, monitoring and education help provide peace of mind. Our Cardiac Rehab nurses and exercise physiologists who track your performance and progress will share reports with your cardiologist regarding your status in exercise, aerobic function, target heart rate, ECG sessions and more.

Who Is Eligible for Cardiac Rehab?

Cardiac Rehab is for patients who have had stents, heart attacks, bypass or valve surgery and heart failure. It is also for cardiac patients who want to slow down, stop, reverse or manage their heart disease.

Phases of Cardiac Rehab

Our comprehensive Cardiac Rehab program consists of two simple phases to help you manage your condition.

  • Phase 1 (Inpatient Rehab) at Doylestown Hospital

Cardiac surgery patients receive one-on-one care during their hospital stay, including education and two to four exercise sessions each day. Our team of experts will create an exercise program tailored to your needs. Following discharge, you will leave with an exercise plan and a date to start outpatient cardiac rehab. If you live in another region, we will give you information about cardiac rehab programs in your area.

  • Phase 2 (Outpatient EKG-Monitored Rehab) at Doylestown Hospital

Phase 2 Outpatient Cardiac Rehabilitation begins when you are cleared by your cardiologist after your procedure. Before you begin, you will have a one-on-one orientation session, followed by your first exercise assessment. Phase 2 consists of ongoing one-on-one education sessions, monitored exercise sessions and a final one-on-one appointment to review your progress, assess your risk factors and set new goals. Many patients choose to continue cardiac rehab with a Phase 3 program at the Health & Wellness Center.

Team

Our cardiac rehab team includes a physician medical director, cardiac rehab nurses and clinical exercise physiologists. The team creates a personalized exercise and education plan to guide your recovery and support you as you move toward a heart healthy lifestyle.

Maintaining Exercise After Cardiac Rehab

Patients have the option to continue rehabilitation progress by taking part in Heart Strong, a collaboration between Doylestown Health and community gyms that keeps you fit with prescribed exercises from your cardiac rehab team. For more information, call 215.345.2390.
